Miami-Dade: Circle of Brotherhood assumes leadership in community security in Buena Vista
In the context of community safety, Miami-Dade: Circle of Brotherhood assumes leadership in community security in Buena Vista represents a crucial step for the well-being of the community.
Miami-Dade, FL – In a significant announcement for public safety and community empowerment, the organization Circle of Brotherhood has officially taken on the responsibility of security at the Buena Vista complex (formerly known as Lincoln Fields), marking a milestone in the county in the collaboration between community organizations and the public housing sector.
During an event that brought together more than 30 national leaders in violence intervention and prevention, the executive director of Circle of Brotherhood, Brother Lyle Muhammad, announced the start of a community security model that operates without weapons and with a philosophy centered on empathy, social commitment, and peaceful conflict resolution.
A Historic Moment
Brother Lyle Muhammad, Executive Director of Circle of Brotherhood, took the microphone to officially present a 24/7 security contract in Buena Vista, now under the supervision of his organization. This agreement not only provides continuous surveillance but also an approach focused on love, empathy, and community commitment.
Faced with the withdrawal of major security firms that declined the contract due to the area’s reputation, Circle of Brotherhood accepted the challenge. “Our secret is love,” said Muhammad, highlighting how his team has prevented violent raids, assisted residents with medical needs, and prevented acts of violence through dialogue and active presence.
“The majority of the top armed security companies in South Florida refused to work here because of the reputation of the area. We said yes, because we believe our community deserves to live safe and with dignity,” Muhammad stated before an audience of activists, residents, and institutional representatives.
The initiative is carried out in collaboration with Joint Development and the Overtown Youth Center, under the direction of Tina Brown, who facilitated the connection between the developers and the community organization. “We want this model to be scalable in communities across the country,” Brown affirmed. “We are showing that transformation begins where people live.”
A Human Approach to Security
Unlike traditional approaches, these brothers work unarmed, dividing their shifts into three blocks: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. The mission is clear: to ensure a peaceful yet firm presence, focused on building trust and strengthening community ties.
More Than Security: Hope and Unity
The alliance was made possible thanks to the intervention of Tina Brown, Executive Director of the Overtown Youth Center, who facilitated the connection between Circle of Brotherhood and the community’s new developers. Brown emphasized that this is just the beginning of a broader transformation: “We want this model to scale across all communities from Dade to Broward and beyond.”
In addition to security, the community receives comprehensive support: from financial education to family wellness, provided by the Overtown Youth Center team. The message was clear: transformation begins door by door, block by block.
“We want equal participation in the public safety ecosystem. Until community intervention work is valued equally, we will not achieve the justice our people deserve,” concluded Brother Lyle.
Every day, Circle of Brotherhood deploys community teams in three shifts to ensure a constant presence in the neighborhood. These teams not only prevent violent incidents but also assist residents with medical needs, accompany youth on extracurricular activities, and mediate conflicts with a human-centered approach.
A National Model in the Making
The ceremony also celebrated the collaboration with the University of Chicago Crime Lab, and the presence of Dr. Chico Tillman, founder of the CVLA Academy, who honored the local effort as a national example of innovation and genuine commitment to safety. Dr. Tillman praised the community innovation in Miami as an example of national leadership. “Not only are they securing housing, they are creating spaces where people can live, thrive, and feel valued,” he stated.
The event concluded with a moving round of testimonies from representatives of organizations in cities such as Los Angeles, Dallas, Trenton, Newark, Chicago, and Atlanta, among others, who reaffirmed their commitment to replicating this model of community-based safety.
Institutional support on the way?
A key question remains: Will this innovative community safety effort have the formal support of Miami-Dade County? Institutional support could be decisive in scaling and sustaining this model in other communities in need.
This initiative reflects a paradigm shift in the concept of public safety: an approach where communities lead, care for, and transform their own environments from within, with love, perseverance, and a vision for the future.
