Enough Lies: Miami-Dade Is Bankrupt Due to Political Ineptitude and Mismanagement. The truth is much harsher and documented

By News Miami Dade

While Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and her allies on the commission try to sell the idea that Miami-Dade’s budget crisis is the fault of the transition to constitutional offices or old ghosts like COVID, the truth is much harsher and documented: the county is mired in a historic deficit—and the responsibility lies exclusively with those governing today.

The Video That Exposed the Truth
In a recent public address, Dariel Fernández, the county’s current Tax Collector, laid bare reality:

“They’ve had seven years to prepare for this change, and what they did was spend and spend taxpayer money. Now they look for scapegoats elsewhere, but the truth is in the numbers: you created this deficit.”

Where Is the Money? Numbers Don’t Lie

  • In 2024-25, the operating budget was $8,072 million.
  • For 2025-26, it brutally jumped to $12,934 million—a 60%+ increase.
  • The deficit exceeds $400 million with no credible explanation.

Far from investing in essentials—like safety, infrastructure, maintenance, or truly affordable housing—the administration prioritized discretionary spending, inflated contracts, and projects with dubious returns, while delaying urgent investments in technology, digitization, and human resources for the constitutional transition.

Dariel was blunt:

“They can’t keep using COVID as a never-ending excuse. Taxpayer money deserves respect, and here there’s been neither planning nor honesty. The county is in the red because they spent more than they had, and they knew it.”

The Deception Show: Commissioners and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava

Official budget documents prove the mayor and commissioners had years to anticipate and manage the transition to new constitutional offices. Instead, they squandered funds, hid expenses, and arrived at 2025 with an improvised system and accounts in the red.

At public hearings, officials have chosen to dismiss citizens’ warnings and uncomfortable questions. Dariel stated it to their faces:

“Stop deceiving residents. What’s missing here is transparency, and if you refuse to listen to the people, we’ll remind you in the next election.”

The Moment of Truth: Who Answers for the Lost Money?
Today, Miami-Dade faces debt that will mortgage future generations’ future while politicians play hot potato. The budget doesn’t lie:

  • Bureaucracy grew (31,901 employees, +650 in one year).
  • Spending on salaries/benefits exceeds $4,400 million.
  • Investments in real housing and essential services are a shadow compared to political/propaganda spending.

Conclusion:
Levine Cava’s administration and her commission majority are, plainly and simply, a failure that can’t be covered with excuses or media campaigns. As Dariel Fernández rightly declared, it’s time for residents to demand accountability and make clear that Miami-Dade is no one’s ATM. The people deserve respect, transparency, and results—not more empty words.
