The sugar of Celia was freedom: The Marlins won’t turn it into complicity. Cuban-Americans, Let’s Defend Celia Cruz’s Legacy! The Marlins Must Not Tarnish Her Name

Miami, FL — This Saturday, May 17th, the Miami Marlins plan to “honor” Celia Cruz at their “Celebrate Cuban Heritage” event. But our community cannot forget: How can they pay tribute to the Queen of Salsa when, in November 2023, they silenced Cuban exiles protesting against the dictatorship’s baseball team?

The Day the Marlins Betrayed a Free Cuba

While the regime’s team played at loanDepot Park, stadium security:

  • Tore away Cuban flags (like the ones Celia proudly waved in exile).
  • Kicked out elders and young protesters for chanting “Freedom!”
  • Silenced victims of the same regime that denied Celia the right to return and say goodbye to her dying mother.

Is this the “heritage” the Marlins are celebrating? Celia, a symbol of resistance, would never have applauded those who legitimize her oppressors.

Artists and the Foundation: Where Do They Stand?

Lucrecia and other artists will perform at this tribute, but we ask:

  • Do they know the Marlins censored protests against the dictatorship?
  • Do they remember Celia died heartbroken, barred from Cuba for her defiance of communism?

We demand answers from the Celia Cruz Foundation:
✅ Did they authorize this event, or are the Marlins exploiting her name?
✅ Will they require the Marlins to apologize for their 2023 actions?
✅ Will they ensure this isn’t a PR stunt to whitewash Cuba’s suffering?

¡Azúcar with Dignity!

Cubans and freedom lovers: don’t normalize this hypocrisy. Celia isn’t a empty slogan—she’s the cry of those who die at sea, of political prisoners, of mothers weeping on the island.

Concrete actions:

The Marlins have not rectified their position.

Pressure on social media (#CeliaNoSeMancha).

Use flags and slogans that fight for Cuban freedom (let them hear our voice).

Celia was killed by Castroism twice: by exiling her and by denying her goodbye to her mother. Let’s not allow them to use her now to whitewash complicity!

And you, what will you do to honor her?
